WHO data shows the killers

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on the global burden of disease. It showed that heart attacks and heart related problems, such as cardiovascular disease is the top killer of people in the world.

The WHO statistics

The top 3 killers of people worldwide are:

  • #1. 29% of deaths are from heart attack or heart problems,
  • #2. 16.2% of deaths are from infectious diseases,
  • #3. 12.6% of deaths are from cancer.

The report is based on death registration information from 112 countries and also includes estimates where reporting from some countries is not complete.

Additional information

The WHO report also included the following facts:

  • 58.8 million people died worldwide in 2004, most were aged over 60 years.
  • Nearly one in five deaths was a child under 5 years old.
  • Women die more often from heart disease than men.
  • The rate of women dieing from heart disease is 31.5%.
  • The rate for men dieing of heart disease is 26.8%.
