Less than 50% of diabetics reach target levels

The Diabetes Impact Survey, a global research project shows less than 50% of type 2 diabetes patients meet long term target blood glucose measures (HbA1c), and 40% have diabetes complications.

The Diabetes Impact Survey

The Diabetes Impact Study commissioned by Merck & Co., Inc., includes a panel of medical, scientific and clinical professionals in the field of diabetes from around the world.

They surveyed 866 health care professionals and 607 patients under treatment for type 2 diabetes across six countries (Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, India and Mexico).

The main findings of the study include:

  • less than 50% of patients are achieving their target HbA1c goal
  • 40% of diabetics reported complications associated with their disease.

Raising awareness of diabetes

Marc Evans, Consultant Diabetologist, Llandlough Hospital, comments, “Diabetes is set to increase. It is predicted that diabetes prevalence will double world-wide, rising to at least 5% by 2010, accounting for 3.07 million people in the UK.”

He added, Having type 2 diabetes doubles your risk of developing cardiovascular disease. More needs to be done to raise the profile of what it means to have diabetes”.
