A good night’s sleep

I didn’t really need another good reason to get a good night’s sleep. I like my sleep.

But for those who like to burn the candle at both ends, think again! A New York study has shown that people who have less than 6 hours of sleep each night are more likely to develop prediabetes and diabetes.

The sleep and diabetes study

Researchers studied 1,455 people over a 6 year period as part of the Western New York Health Study. In total, 91 of the group had blood glucose problems.

The participants had to record how much sleep they had during the week each night, and were classified as either:

  • short sleepers – less than 6 hours
  • mid-sleepers – 6 to 8 hours
  • long sleepers – more than 8 hours

The results

Those people who slept less than 6 hours a night were 4.56 times more likely, from those getting over 6 hours, to have impaired fasting glucose at the end of the 6 year study.

There was no advantage to sleeping more than 8 hours on blood glucose levels. The optimal sleep for healthy blood glucose levels was sleep between 6 and 8 hours each night. These results took into account other influencing factors such as age, obesity, and family history.

Study researcher Prof Rafalson from The University of Buffalo said, “This study supports growing evidence of the association of inadequate sleep with adverse health issues.”

The study results were presented at the American Heart Association’s Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention.
