Don’t pass the salt please!

A study shows if Americans cut their salt intake to recommended levels, there would be less cases of high blood pressure, which would save billions of dollars in health care costs.

We know we should cut out salt, for the sake of our blood pressure and health!

But, it’s not always that easy when you are shopping in a hurry to read labels and find low salt products. This video shows how to make low salt food choices. Great tips!

The latest salt study

The researchers looked at blood pressure, anti hypertensive medication use, and sodium intake on a government health survey from 1999 to 2004.

The data suggested that reducing sodium intake to the recommended maximum of 2300mg a day was would reduce hypertension cases by 11 million. This would then save $18 billion in American health care costs.

Note: It is recommended by the CDC that you consume only 1,500mg of sodium daily if; you have high blood pressure, are African American, and aged middle-aged and older. That’s about 70% of the population!

The study from non profit organization RAND in California was published in American Journal of Health Promotion.
