Lack of sleep damages health

I did a study review back in March which showed a good night’s sleep can reduce the risk of developing diabetes. Since then even more studies have confirmed the health benefits of a good nights sleep. The evidence is mounting!

A panel of leading sleep researchers met in New Orleans to review the new studies in this growing area of sleep research.

What the researchers discovered

Several studies now show that short sleep and poor quality sleep impacts appetite and insulin resistance. These are both major steps on the road to developing type 2 diabetes.

In one study, researchers from the University of Chicago found a lack of sleep disturbs hormones and the neuroendocrine control of appetite. This leads to excessive overeating. The impact of overeating can increase and decrease insulin resistance which leads to type 2 diabetes.

When does lack of sleep impact health?

Researcher Dr. Van Cauter described a study which showed that only 3 days of poor sleep is all that’s needed to increase insulin resistance in humans. Just 3 days of poor quality and little sleep results in higher levels of insulin which is a step towards developing diabetes.

In addition, a study showed that short sleep over a 5 year period causes an increase in systolic blood pressure.

Is sleep deprivation the way of the future?

The panel of sleep experts agreed that lack of sleep is becoming more common in industrialized countries. Many people are ‘time poor’ and cut into their sleep time to get things done.

The panel agreed it is important to understand further how poor quality sleep produces changes in the hormones and leads to obesity and diabetes. As people sleep less rates of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease are on the increasing.

The researchers feel there is a strong connection, and good sleep is key to good health.

The sleep panel which discussed the latest studies did so at the Experimental Biology meeting.
