Molecular trigger for hypertension found

A molecular malfunction in a scientific study of rats may explain why people develop high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and immune problems, researchers reported in Hypertension journal.

The study was only a preliminary study on rats. It did show a trigger at a molecular level as to why people with hypertension are more prone to developing type 2 diabetes and immune disorders.

The hypertensive rat study

San Diego researchers were able to successfully reverse hypertensive rats symptoms of high blood pressure, insulin resistance, and immune suppression by using a new drug.

The researchers wrote in their report that the study, which they hope to replicate in humans will be important for those with hypertension.

Researchers comments

Prof Bohlon said, “With the national and international emphasis on obesity and its attendant cardiovascular problems, there is a tendency to forget that essential hypertension affects about the same percentage of humans as does serious obesity and an even higher percentage of the population than does type 2 diabetes mellitus.”

“These results point to a single mechanism that explains multiple and diverse cell dysfunctions encountered in hypertensive rats, and they also suggest that a similar mechanism may be operating in humans suffering simultaneously from hypertension, diabetes, and other metabolic conditions.” researcher Schmid-Sch nbein said.
