New metabolic syndrome guidelines released

The Endocrine Society has released new guidelines for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes in patients at metabolic risk.

Metabolic syndrome

According to the American Heart Association metabolic syndrome is characterized by a group of metabolic risk factors in one person, including:

• abdominal obesity
• blood fat (cholesterol) disorders
• high blood pressure
• insulin resistance or glucose intolerance

The new guidelines

The guidelines released from the Endocrine Society include;

• Doctors should test and identify patients at metabolic risk with measurement of blood pressure, waist circumference, fasting lipid profile, and fasting glucose.
• Patients with prediabetes should be screened every 1 to 2 years for the development of diabetes.
• Doctors should encourage lifestyle changes in those at risk, including, increased activity and changes in diet to loose weight.
• All patients at metabolic risk should have a 10 year assessment for cardiovascular disease.
