Drinking soda with high fructose corn syrup has been well linked to obesity. Now a new study has shown a significant connection between high blood pressure and fructose consumption.
I hope this study gives another reason to avoid drinking sodas!
This video helped me to understand the impact of drinking soda with fructose has on the body. It is an eye-opener! Thank you to Megan Gelber, health counselor with Integrative Nutrition and Columbia University and ehowhealth for use of the video.
Spanish researchers gave 74 men 200 grams of fructose each day in addition to their normal diet. This was a pretty high level, as most American adults consume about 70 to 90 grams of fructose a day. A 16 ounce bottle of soda gives about 50 grams of fructose sugar.
After 2 weeks on the high fructose diet, the systolic blood pressure of the men increased by 6 Hgmm and diastolic blood pressure by about 3 Hgmm.
The effect seemed to be reversible though, as researchers found most of the high blood pressure readings returned to normal after 2 months.
Researchers in Ohio studied mice drinking fructose water. Some had unlimited access to the drink, while others drank it once a day.
Researcher Mariana Morris from Wright State University, Ohio said, “The first thing we noticed was that the mice on restricted access rushed to their drinking bottles to load up on the sweetened beverage, similar to teenagers who drink too many soft drinks. “
The mice that drank fructose water during their regular sleeping hours gained more weight and had higher stress hormone levels than the other mice.
Both studies were presented at the American Heart Association conference in Chicago.
