CDC: asthmatics should get a flu shot

I haven’t had a flu shot before. But it is recommended those people who are at higher risk of complications from the flu, should get one each year.

According to the CDC, (Center for Disease Control) that includes asthmatics!

A recent study shows that most adult asthmatics are not getting their recommended flu shots.

What the CDC found

The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System has been collecting data from random telephone surveys of U.S. adults since 1984. Researchers analyzed the responses of 173,572 adults aged 18 to 64 years and found that 8.4% had asthma.

Data from the 2006-2007 influenza season showed vaccination estimates ranged from 27% in California to 53% in Tennessee. The average across all American states was 43%. In comparison, 29% of people aged 18 to 64 years without asthma were vaccinated.

I thought 43% was quite high, but the CDC guidelines are even higher!

The CDC guidelines for asthmatics

The CDC states that the vaccination levels among asthmatics is below the guideline of having 60% of adults aged 18 to 64 with asthma vaccinated for influenza.

Peng-jun Lu from the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC, who led the study, said influenza vaccinations are one of several, “key clinical activities that should be considered as essential for quality asthma care.”

The CDC explains that flu vaccination is recommended for patients with asthma due to an increased risk of flu related complications.
