Fish oil capsules are good for the heart

A new study has shown taking a capsule of fish oil daily improves the survival rate of patients with heart failure.

Fish oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids which are linked to a range of health benefits, including reducing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease and depression.

The fish oil study

Researchers at the Luigi Tavazzi of the ANMCO Research Centre in Florence, Italy followed 7,000 patients with cardiovascular problems for an average 3.9 years.

Patients on active treatment received a daily Lovaza capsule containing 1 gram of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Patients who took the daily fish oil capsule were 9% less likely to die than those given a placebo. 955 patients in the Lovaza group died, compared with 1,014 in the placebo group

They were also less likely to be admitted to hospital with cardiovascular problems.

The study was published on line by the Lancet medical journal.
