Taking your body temperature

I was recently asked by a user whether they should buy a digital or ear thermometer, or just stick with their old mercury thermometer.

Personally, I love my ear thermometer! It has had a lot of use, especially when my children were babies. Ear thermometers are very convenient when taking the temperature of young ones who wiggle around. :) Ear thermometers give an almost instant reading!

How much do they cost?

Ear and digital thermometers have come down a lot in price. I have a Braun ThermoScan ear thermometer that sells from about $40. (I am sure I paid twice that 8 years ago!) I have had it for 8 years and it is still going strong. Most digital thermometers are around $20. Both are available on line and at pharmacy’s and drug stores.

A mercury thermometer will be accurate of course, but if you want a quick reading then the digital and ear thermometers are a much better option.

Video: How to take your body temperature accurately

I was able to find this handy video which shows step by step how to use a digital thermometer and an ear thermometer for an accurate body temperature reading. It shows just how quickly you can get a reading with them and tips on making sure the reading is correct.
