Anxiety linked to hypertension

Those people who have chronic anxiety have 4 times the risk of suffering from high blood pressure, according to new Canadian research.

Montreal researchers claim anxiety disorders may cause changes to blood vessels and heart function.

The anxiety and hypertension study

Researchers studied 185 people of an average age of 58 years, with no history of high blood pressure. 16% had an anxiety disorder and 14% had depression or mood disorders.

After 1 year, 14% of those with an anxiety disorder had developed high blood pressure, compared to 4% who had no anxiety. The patients with mood disorders were not at higher risk of hypertension according to the research.
