Laughter is the best medicine

A good belly laugh may help to reduce blood pressure, according to a report by a “Laughing School” presented at the American Society of Hypertension meeting.

The laughing study

Researchers undertook an observational study of 200 healthy IT call center workers in India. Half the volunteers participated in seven 20 minute “laughing groups” over three weeks, and the other half was the control group.

The laughing groups involved deep breathing exercises along with laughter.

The results

After the 3 week laughing treatment, systolic pressure decreased by about 7 mm Hg in the laugh group versus no change in the control group. Diastolic pressure decreased by 3 mm Hg versus no change in the control group.

Dr. Kataria from the Dr. Kataria School of laughter Yoga said, “It’s not about humor or being funny. It’s about exercising the diaphragm with laughter.”

Note: This study was an observational study only and was conducted on people who did not have hypertension.
